Certificate

A typical keeper day (per published itineraries): ~8:00 AM start with care work (breaking bamboo, washing bamboo shoots, cleaning enclosure glass), lunch and a panda film around noon, panda-cake making and leaf cutting mid-afternoon, then your certificate by ~2:30 PM. Even during the keeper program you are not allowed to touch or hold the pandas.

Dujiangyan Panda Valley (熊猫谷)
~17 km from the closed base, ~65 km from Chengdu. Part of the Chengdu system but focused on semi-wild training. Red pandas roam freely and may walk right past you on the boardwalks.
Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve (卧龙)
~120 km from Chengdu. The largest panda reserve with the most natural setting and a full volunteer program similar to Dujiangyan's. Best for an immersive mountain experience.
Bifengxia Panda Base (碧峰峡)
~160 km from Chengdu, near Ya'an. One of three bases offering the official panda keeper volunteer program, set in a scenic gorge with fewer crowds than Wolong.
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (成都大熊猫繁育研究基地)
~10 km from downtown Chengdu. The most famous base with a panda nursery and excellent museum. Very crowded — arrive before 8 AM. No volunteer program, but the best place to see baby pandas.

The park holds 40+ pandas (20+ on view) across four main zones, each a 5-10 minute walk apart, plus a shuttle. To dodge the tour groups, start at the entrance and work inward: Panpan Garden → Linze Garden → Diequan Garden → Shuangnan Garden.
Panpan Garden (盼盼园)
The first zone you meet. Watch mother pandas caring for cubs — eating bamboo, climbing, and playing.
Linze Garden (临泽园)
The red panda area. Spot red pandas in the trees and black bears in the neighboring enclosure.
Diequan Garden (叠泉园)
The largest zone and furthest from the entrance, home to the most pandas — including Panda Lele, the famously active returnee from Singapore. Take the shuttle if you'd rather not walk.
Shuangnan Garden (双楠园)
More giant pandas in a hillside setting. Expect some uphill walking between the viewing areas here.

- The base is hilly with many steps and not very wheelchair-friendly — if that's a concern, Panda Valley is the flatter alternative.
- Stone viewing fences are quite high: hold young children (under about 1.2 m) so they can see the pandas.
